Before the industrial revolution, being physically fit meant being able to do all of your daily tasks without getting too tired. On the other hand, physical fitness is now thought of as a measurement of the body's ability to work and play well, stay healthy, fight off diseases that make you feel weak, and handle emergency situations. This is because of the rise of machines and changes in how people live.
"Fitness" can mean either the quality of being fit or the state of being fit. Around 1950, people in the west used the word "fitness" ten times more than they did before.
